A note to participants from Raga Surabhi:
Dear Rasikas,
Hearty congratulations to all the participants and winners of this special quiz from Raga Surabhi Team. To be honest, we were actually a bit skeptical about rasika participation for this kind of a theory quiz. But your overwhelming participation has proved us wrong! In fact, this quiz now stands right at the top in terms of the number of 'Perfect Scorers' :) Rasikas have also mentioned that they look forward to more such quizzes in the future too. We will surely keep that in mind :)
Once again, cheers to all winners and special congratulations to the 'Perfect Scorers'!

Introduction
This time around, we decided to play around a little bit with the theoretical aspects and swaras. If you are already beginning to think that the quiz is not for people like you, then. . . . .this quiz will prove you wrong!
For those who feel theory is a bit boring or it is too complicated, this quiz is a good way to get started! We are quite confident that at the end of the quiz you would begin to ask for more :)
The bad news is that it is strictly a theory quiz with no guessing possible if you do not know the swaras present in the ragas we are talking about!
The good news is that the quiz is only pertaining to Raga Surabhi syllabus! So, if you spend some time on the site, you should be able to get most, no, all the answers!! But of course, you must know where to look for the answers ;)
Then, let's get started with 'Carnatic Algebra'. Carnatic Algebra??!! You will soon see why :)
Rules of the game
1. There are totally five questions and every question has three parts. You need to identify the three variables 'X', 'Y' and 'Z' in all of them! Now you know why?? :)
2. In most cases, there is a connection between the three variables, you need to be absolutely sure about 'X' to get your 'Y' and 'Z' correct!
3. Every correct answer gets 10 points, so that makes it 150. Plus a bonus of 10 marks if you get all the three variables correct in a single question, that makes it another 50. The maximum score for this quiz, thus, is 200 points!
4. We do not want to spoil the fun by giving clues except that there is a sample question to get you started!
5. Rasikas can send in their answers in a simple format with question number and answers to X, Y and Z for each question to quiz@ragasurabhi.com. The deadline for submitting your answers is 12th Dec 2014.
We hope you will really enjoy solving this quiz! Sit with a paper and pen to start solving the equations :))
Sample question and answer
X = Valachi + Suddha Rishabam
Find X.
X = Malayamarutham! Because when you include Ri1 in the arohanam/avarohanam of Valachi, you get Malayamarutham.
Got the drift?? Get, set and go!!!
Week 275 Special Quiz - Questions
Identify X, Y and Z from the following statements
Question 1.
X climbs up as Suddhasaveri and comes down as Shankarabaranam.
In X, replace Madhyamam to Antara Gandharam in the ascent to get Y.
In Y, replace descent with the same swaras as in ascent to get Z.
Question 2.
Kamavardhini transformed into X by letting go off all its Dhaivatam.
X still feels restless and lets go off its Rishabam as well to get Y.
Y transforms its Ga3 to Ri2 to end up being Z.
Question 3.
X lies exactly in between Mayamalava Gowlai and Shankarabaranam.
Y = X - (2 Pa's)
Z = Y - (2 Ri's)
Question 4.
X = 20
In X, if you replace descent with that of Hindolam, you get Y.
In X, replace Madhyamam with an alternate Madhyamam to get Z.
Question 5.
Purvangam of Simhendramadhyamam + Uttarangam of Harikambodhi = X
Purvangam of Gowri Manohari + Uttarangam of Latangi = Y
X + Y - 22 = Z
