Note to all participants from Dr. Uma Ram
Dear Rasikas,
We are happy to announce the results of this special quiz. Special congratulations to all the participants and winners of this quiz! As always, this time too, participants have come up with some interesting answers. Many of them have looked up music textbooks or the internet to come up with some rare ragas apart from the common and popular ragas.
Before we get to the answers of this quiz, at this point, I would like to recollect a conversation that I had with my Guru, Smt. Lalitha Sivakumar, couple of years ago about how a raga gets its credence and why some ragas just exist in paper and we have not been able to know much about them. She told me that just by mixing and matching different swara patterns one can possibly arrive at numerous ragas and there do exist such ragas in theory, but we need to see how many compositions exist in such ragas and whether they have been handled by Trinity and other great composers of Carnatic music. Keeping this in mind, the answers to this quiz would be the most common and popular ragas which are frequently handled and heard in different platforms of Carnatic music. And as in any quiz, the quiz master’s decision is final :))
Note - If Raga Surabhi is the only reference that participants have used, then participants would get 21 ragas from the treasure hunt. If they referred to other sources, then they would end up with 24 ragas. This is important to mention because many of our earlier quizzes could be answered by just referring to Raga Surabhi alone. In this case, a few ragas still haven’t been featured in Raga Surabhi as yet :)

Welcome to another episode of Raga Surabhi Special Quiz - 'Raga Treasure Hunt'
So what is the concept this time? This quiz provides you the opportunity to test how strong you are in the Arohanam-Avarohanam of ragas.
Rules of the game 1. There are two pools given below, an Arohanam Pool and an Avarohanam Pool. 2. You will find different Arohanam and Avarohanam patterns or clues provided in these pools. 3. You need to match a particular Arohanam with a suitable Avarohanam so that it forms a Raga. For example, if you find S R2 G3 P D2 S in the Arohanam pool, think which raga has this Arohanam and see if the corresponding Avarohanam is available in the pool. If it is available, then you have found your Raga! Voila!! Find as many ragas as possible from the clues provided. 4. Sometimes, the same Arohanam or Avarohanam pattern can fit more than one raga….so remember to use it as many times as required!
5. You just have to mail us the names of the Ragas that you could find from the clues provided here.
Last date for submission - 8th October 2019. Mail your answers to quiz@ragasurabhi.com Have fun and all the best!
