Week 575 Special Quiz Winners

Dear Rasikas,

The 'Fix the Bug' quiz was a fun quiz designed mainly to test the understanding of the theoretical and practical knowledge of ragas.
The difficulty level of this quiz is not too high but it might be one that is a bit tedious and time consuming. That is probably the reason why we have received only a limited number of responses this time.
However, I am extremely happy to share with you that those you have sent in their answers have taken a lot of time and interest to do it right.
I was amazed to see the thoroughness and the detailedness in their submissions. Hats off and special congratulations to all participants!

» Almost there - Sarath Ravikumar and S Rajarathnam have got all correct except one. Both of them have missed just one bug each in the practical segment. Hearty congratulations and three cheers!!
» Missed just a few- Lalitha S, Ramadass V, Nila Krishnan, Aditya Mahesh, Raveendranathan R M, Prerna S V
» Creditable Performance - Satkrit S, Geetha N, Uddhavan G, Vidya Shankar S, Umagiri S, Deepa R, Hema C, Anuradha S, Tundra Vasi, Geetha S.

Introduction

Dear Rasikas,
Time for celebration again! We are delighted to welcome you to another episode of special quiz on the occasion of reaching two milestones - completion of 575 weeks which also coincides with the 11th anniversary of Raga Surabhi!
So what is special this time? This quiz is a dedication to all the Software Developers who toil day and night to find and fix the bugs in their software! Well, the name of the quiz is ‘Fix the bug!’
Curious? Read on...

Rules of the game

1. There are two segments in this quiz, a theory segment and a practical segment but the good news is the approach to solving the quiz remains the same in both these segments :)
2. Normally ‘bug’ refers to an error or flaw that produces an undesired result in the context of a software program. In the present context, bug refers to a mistake made in a raga, that is, it could be a note that is out of place, or a prayoga that does not belong to that raga and so on……so basically something that is not permitted to occur in that raga.
3. There are five clues each in theory and practical segments. Rasikas need to find and report the following parameters -
A. Identify the raga featured in the clue.
B.Identify the place of occurrence of the bug. For audio clues, the time stamp (the timing) of the occurrence should be given.
C. What is the nature of the bug or otherwise, what is the mistake, is it a note or a phrase?
Useful tips -
The first few phrases are all bug free and should be used for identifying the raga in the clue. There can be one or more bugs in the same clue….watch out :)
A better understanding would come once you take a look at the sample questions.

4. Please send in your answers to ragasurabhi@ragasurabhi.com on or before 18.September.2020.

Answer - Raga is Mohanam. One bug in the phrase 'P D2 G2' - the note G2 cannot come in Mohanam. Second bug in the last phrase - the note R1 which doesn’t belong to Mohanam.
In this case, the bugs were only faulty swaras but remember the bugs could also be faulty phrases or sequences.

Answer: Raga is Kharaharapriya. The first bug occurs in the phrase R2 G2 M2 P D2 N2 - M2 is not allowed in Kharaharapriya. The second bug occurs in the final phrase - R1 is not permitted in this raga.

Q I-2. G3 P D2 S N3 D2 P, D2 P M1 G3 R2, G3 P M1 G3 R2 S N3 D2, S R2 G3 G3 P, P M1 G3 R2 S R2 G3 P, G3 M1 P D2 - D2 P M1 G3 R2, S R2 G3 P D2 G3 R2 S, D2 S R2 G3 P M1 G3 R2 S D2 P, P D2 N3 S; N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S.
Answer: Raga is Bilahari. The first bug is in the phrase G3 M1 P - G3 M1 P is not allowed in Bilahari since in arohanam only G3 P is permitted (M1 is the bug). Answer: Raga is Brindavana Saranga. The first bug is in the phrase R2 P M1 N3 P S - Here N3 is used as a descending phrase which is a bug. If one goes from M1 to N3 in the ascend, then the next note should be higher then N3, but here M1 N3 P is used as a descending phrase which is the bug. It should be N2 instead of N3. The second bug occurs in the phrase P N3 S P N3 P - Here N3 is used in the descending sequence which is not permitted. It should be P N2 P, instead. The third bug occurs in the phrase N3 S R2 N2 S - Here N2 is used in the ascending sequence which is not allowed. It should be N3 S R2 N3 S.
