Dear Rasikas,
We are happy to be back with this week's update. Before we go to the regular updates, we would like to announce the introduction of a new segment - 'Do it Yourself' dedicated to the learning and identification of swara sthanas in the Raga Surabhi Quiz page. We plan to provide audio clips of small swara sequences for rasikas to listen and decipher the nature of Ri, Ga, Ma etc. (whether it is R1 or G2 or M2). The answers to these audio clips would be provided in the answer link below. The idea of keeping it as a 'Do it Yourself' exercise (not as a quiz) is to enable general rasikas to participate in the weekly quiz and not to scare them away with too many technicalities. We appeal to all rasikas to continue their participation in our raga quiz as usual.
These exercises are not a must for all, it is only for those enthusiasts who wrote to us about wanting to gain more knowledge in to the grammar of carnatic music. Please do tell us whether you find them useful.
The new ragas for this week are Kuntalavarali and Saraswathi. Both are beautiful ragas, especially Kuntalavarali which is a buoyant raga with a very distinct flavour. The full song for this week is a very well known composition of Saint Thyagaraja, 'Sri Rama Padama' in Amrithavahini set to Adi tala. This is probably the only popular composition in raga Amrithavahini.
Week 43 update:
- New Raga - Kuntalavarali & Saraswathi
- DIY - 1
- Full song - Sri Rama Padama
- Weekly quiz - 43
Listen to them and as always, do send your valuable comments and feedback.
Have a great week!
Raga Surabhi Team
